“Thiana Ruiz Alegria is the 2015-2016 recipient of the President’s Student Champion for Inclusive Excellence and Diversity Award. She is a double major and is currently working towards a Bachelor of Arts in Human Development with an emphasis in Health Service and a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish. Her lasting contributions include the development of the Latino Student Center, the creation of the UndocuAlly Training for undocumented student, several leadership roles with S.T.A.N.D., United Students of Color and as the organizer of a community reading program.
In addition to raising over $2000 in scholarships for students, Dr. Alyssa Goldstein Sepinwall credits Ms. Ruiz as the inspiration for the Dr. Jerry Sepinwall DREAM scholarship. Ms. Ruiz has also bridged efforts between the campus and the local community. She will leave a sustaining contribution to the campus that will live on long after she has graduated,”—All Peoples Luncheon, Office of Diversity, Educational Equity, Inclusive & Ombud Services, 2015.
