Today, Janet McDaniel’s last cohort threw a little surprise thank you and happy retirement party. Good cake, a wonderful slide show history with musical accompaniment,a little speech, a reader’s theater, lots of hugs and tears. Thanks Janet for creating this wonderful one of a kind program and mentoring 26 years of fantastic middle school teachers. You are leaving quite a legacy! — Laurie Stowell, October 19, 2017
From Janet McDaniel…
“I was hired in 1991 to form a teacher education program for middle grades teachers. After a year of planning, we launched the Middle Level Teacher Education Program in Fall 1992 and Laurie Stowell and I have taught the program since the beginning. I was the coordinator of the MidLevel Program until Erika Daniels and I began to co-coordinate and she has been the sole coordinator for the past several years. I’m now Professor Emerita in the School of Education.
The ML Program is the only one of its kind in California. Unfortunately, California does not have a credential program for middle grades teachers, so our candidates earn a Multiple Subjects Credential plus at least one authorization or Single Subject Credential in a specific subject field. We enroll one cohort of 25-30 candidates each year and all our classes are taught in a CSUSM-owned modular classroom on the campus of Woodland Park Middle School in San Marcos.
Over 600 candidates have completed the program, and the vast majority of them became teachers of young adolescents in our region. Several have become middle school principals and school district central office administrators. In spring 2017, we held an all-cohorts reunion to mark the program’s 25th anniversary.
The MidLevel teaching team has collaborated on research into middle level teacher preparation and has scores of joint publications and presentations at national conferences. The program has won awards from the National Association for Multicultural Education and the California League of Middle Schools.
Erika Daniels, Laurie Stowell, Moses Ochanji and Rong-Ji Chen are longtime members of the teaching team.
I’m really proud of what we’ve accomplished and I’m certain that there are even brighter days ahead with Erika and the team exploring new avenues.”
