Human Development students participate in Democracy in Action Initiative

Democracy in Action (DIA) is a community engagement practice for CSUSM faculty and students to partner with a local city government to conduct research and to gather qualitative and quantitative data that will benefit city projects that need extra attention.

This year, Dr. Eliza Bigham and her Human Development (HD) research students will participate in this initiative, as well as the Senior Experience program at CSUSM, and partner with the City of San Marcos Senior Center to research aspects such as volunteer intake processes and opportunities, program administration, economical volunteer software programs, and more.

Andrea Gonzalez, Recreation Supervisor II at the Senior Center explains that the initiatives for this project will be fluid, so research conducted by the students could also unveil new discoveries that generate new projects to be addressed in the near future.

Students will work closely with the city of San Marcos officials and learn more about becoming more civically engaged.  Once the research is polished and completed, the students will present their findings to their partner and local city officials.

Dr. Bigham and HD students began this project this week and started off by first visiting the Senior Center. Stay tuned and learn more about how this project progresses. In the meantime, mark your calendar to attend the DIA Launch on February 13, 2018, at the City of San Marcos Community Center, 4:30-6:30 p.m.  (See below for more info.)
