Lynn Amabile teaches students about Child Welfare

by Lynn Amabile, Lecturer
Social Work Department

Three years ago, I was hired by the Master of Social Work (MSW) program at CSUSM after a 30-year career in San Diego County Child Welfare Services.  At the time, I thought I would retire from the county and enjoy some traveling and spend some time with my family, but a child welfare colleague sent me the job announcement and here I am at CSUSM….happy as can be!  I am a Child Welfare Lecturer and also the IV-E Liaison with the county.  The IV-E program provides a stipend for individuals to receive their MSW and they then commit to working for Child Welfare for two years post-graduation. We have 12 students who have received this stipend and I am so lucky to be a part of their journey.

I accidentally found my way into Child Welfare and was fortunate to have a long and wonderful career serving vulnerable children and families.  I had the opportunity to work in all areas of Child Welfare and to experience firsthand the rewards and challenges of a Social Work career.  These experiences shaped me into the Social Worker and the person that I am today and I feel so fortunate to be able to share those experiences with our MSW students.  I have been so impressed with our students and their level of commitment to providing the best possible services for the clients they serve.  In addition, I see their passion for Social Justice and their desire to be change agents as they work to better their communities.  They inspire me each and every day!

I also love that my second career in teaching allows me to continue to learn and grow in a field that I adore.  The honor of mentoring the future generation of Social Workers rarely feels like work to me.  I also get to work with the most fabulous group of people!

In my spare time, I enjoy the usual things like reading and cooking, but a little-known fact about me is that I love to tap dance.  This is a work in progress and it’s not always a pretty sight, but I sure do have fun.  I also own a 1986 VW Westfalia which is something I have wanted since I was in college in the 1980’s and love heading over to the beach for a camping trip with my dog.  There’s only room in the van for two so the dog usually gets the spot much to my husband’s chagrin!  I have two kids that I adore (21 and 25) and am getting ready to celebrate my 33rd wedding anniversary.  I have much to be thankful for look forward to many more years at CSUSM.
